Is Donald Trump Supporting Putin? Fresh Remarks Raise Concerns

US President Donald Trump has made remarks regarding the Russia-Ukraine conflict, indicating that he was not keen on giving Vladimir Putin any ultimatum. 

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Sunday, January 4, Trump said he was not sure whether he had a deadline to end the war.

“I don’t do deadlines,” he said, raising fears that he will not put real pressure on the Russian President.

Donald Trump’s Push for a Peace Deal

Before meeting Zelenskyy, Trump spoke with Putin by phone. Trump said on Sunday, the 28th, he had “a good and very productive” phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Trump and Zelensky together had a diplomatic meeting on 28th December 2025 in Florida, mainly to discuss the peace deal to end the war.

After the meeting, Trump said the parties were closer to the Peace Deal on a U.S. proposal to create a free economic zone in parts of the region, under which Kyiv would withdraw its forces as part of a negotiated peace.

“I would not say agreed, but we’re getting closer to an agreement on that, and that’s a big issue. Certainly, that’s one of the big issues, and… it’s unresolved,” he added.

After their December 28 talks, Trump and Zelenskyy held a joint phone call with key European leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron and UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.

After the meeting in Florida, President Trump again had another call with Russia’s Vladimir Putin, the White House reported. 

War Continues Amid Peace Talks

While diplomatic talks are underway, attacks on the ground continue. According to reports, Ukrainian drone strikes have killed civilians in the border regions of Russia, and Russia has responded with missile strikes inside Ukraine.

“I don’t believe that strike happened. There is something that happened fairly nearby but had nothing to do with this.” Trump told reporters on Sunday aboard Air Force One en route back to Washington, D.C., from Florida. 

“I’m not thrilled with Putin. He’s killing too many people,” said Trump.

Despite the progress, Zelenskyy and Ukrainian officials have insisted on preserving Ukraine’s territorial integrity, rejecting any proposals that could compromise the occupied regions.
