“Insurance Is Up To Date” — FAAN Refutes Claims, Confirms All Federal Airports Are Properly Insured

The Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has dismissed claims that federal government-managed airports are not insured, assuring the public that all airports under its management have valid and up-to-date insurance coverage.

The clarification comes after former Murtala Muhammed International Airport Lagos Commandant, Group Captain John Ojikutu (retd), and Overland Airways CEO, Mr. Edward Boyo, criticized the federal government for removing Part 18 from the Nigeria Civil Aviation Regulations (Nig. CARs). Part 18 previously required FAAN to ensure all federal airports were insured.

Speaking at the fifth CHINET Aviation Cargo Conference in Lagos, themed “The Emerging Synergy Between Aviation and Insurance,” Boyo expressed concerns over airport safety and insurance coverage. He stated, “A lot of the accidents that happen at airports are the direct responsibility of the airports. Because airports are traditionally owned by government, you find the muscle of government oppressing the people. We are talking about insuring passengers, airlines and luggage… The inadequacy of their wildlife control, their derubberisation, their runways… many of these factors are not insured. This was removed from Nig. CARs Part 18.”

In response, FAAN Managing Director, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, refuted the allegations. She said, “All federal government airports managed by FAAN are insured, and the insurance is up to date. Derubberisation and runway hygiene have been properly maintained, and records are available. The only areas of concern relate to habitation and community issues impacting wildlife or bird strikes, and we are working closely with relevant stakeholders to address these.”

Mrs. Kuku also highlighted ongoing infrastructure improvements, noting, “Historical runway issues related to structural or engineering concerns, or runways that have exceeded their lifespan, are being corrected gradually through complete overhauls and maintenance.”
