Amidst a sea of protesters wielding placards and banners, the sentiment is clear: Philip Shaibu is unwelcome in the APC fold. With cries asserting his purported lack of electoral value and calls for him to remain within the ranks of the PDP, it’s evident that Shaibu’s political homecoming is met with fierce resistance from his own people.

Indeed, the adage rings true: “When the milk is spilled, what’s the use of crying?” Philip Shaibu now grapples with the harsh reality that power is transient. Once a key figure in the political landscape, his journey from deputy governor to impeachment reflects the volatile nature of politics.

Shaibu’s rift with his erstwhile mentor, Adams Oshiomhole, further exacerbated his downfall. Accused of orchestrating Oshiomhole’s removal as APC National chairman and alienating his allies, Shaibu’s political maneuvers ultimately backfired. Allegations of obstructing the inauguration of 14 house members in Edo State House of Assembly only added fuel to the fire.

Now, impeached, disgraced, and rejected, Philip Shaibu’s downfall serves as a cautionary tale. In the unpredictable realm of politics, hubris and betrayal can swiftly lead to one’s demise.

It is a stark reminder that no matter how high one rises, it is essential to remember and honor the people who have propelled them to that position. Just as a towering tree must nourish its roots to withstand external forces, a politician must prioritize the well-being of their constituents.

History is replete with examples of individuals who fell from grace due to a disconnect from their roots. Take, for instance, the legendary tale of Icarus, whose arrogance led to his downfall despite his lofty ambitions. Similarly, regardless of their origins or status, those who fail to heed the voices of their people are destined to face the consequences.

In the face of external aggression or adversity, it is the support and loyalty of one’s constituents that can see them through. Therefore, political leaders must treat their people with respect, humility, and genuine concern, for it is they who hold the power to lift them up or cast them down.
