I’m not targeting golden boot, I’m focused on winning AFCON – Lookman

Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman has insisted that individual accolades are not his priority at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations, stressing that his main focus is helping Nigeria continue their impressive run in the tournament.

He has been one of Nigeria’s standout performers in Morocco, playing a key role as the Super Eagles booked a place in the quarter-finals with a commanding 4-0 victory over Mozambique. The former African Player of the Year scored once in the encounter and also provided assists for Victor Osimhen and Akor Adams.

With three goals to his name so far at the tournament, Lookman was asked whether he was targeting the AFCON Golden Boot. His response was brief and clear: “No.”

“Personally I’m just thinking about the team,” he said. “Now we are in the quarter-finals, our next opponent is going to be another strong team. We scored four goals, another big performance for the team, so that’s what I care about.”

The Atalanta winger has now equalled his goal tally from the 2023 AFCON in Côte d’Ivoire, with the possibility of surpassing that mark as the tournament progresses in Morocco.
