Her family belongs to a church whose doctrine does not allow members to marry outside the denomination. Her father takes this rule very seriously. When she told him about me, he refused to listen. She tried everything. She spoke to him herself. She involved her siblings. She pleaded. Nothing worked. He made it clear that if she married outside the church, he would disown her. He even said she would not be allowed to attend his funeral when he dies. Hearing that broke my heart.

Because I love her, I was willing to sacrifice. I decided to join her church so we could be together. I thought that would solve the problem. Instead, it made things worse. She had told her father that I hope to become a pastor one day, which is true. But he believes that if I become a pastor, I will eventually influence her to leave their church.
