What I Tested...

  • Laneige JuicePop Box Hydrating & Lightweight Oil Lip Tint ($23, Sephora)

Why I Tested...

How I Tested...

I tried the oil lip tint in multiple shades and took notes on its ease of application, texture, weight, flavor, scent, and pigment. I took photos before and immediately after application, as well as after eating and drinking. I also topped the tint with a lip balm.

Test Results...

  • Weight & texture. These tints hit the ideal middle ground. They offer more excitement than a standard balm, but without the heavy feel of a lipstick. Unlike old-school tints that tend to dry out, this formula is notably glossy and moisturizing. It’s a good solution for anyone who wants to look pulled together for a night out, or go makeup-light with just enough shine.

  • Ease of application. I had to use a mirror the first time I applied to avoid staining surrounding skin. The formula sets quickly, meaning you have a short window to clean up any mistakes before the stain locks into place. I also avoided rubbing my lips together to keep an even coat. Rubbing caused the tint to push to the outer edges of my lips and created an uneven stain.

  • Layer-ability. I wore this tint oil on its own, and then layered on my favorite balm — Laneige’s Glaze Craze Tinted Polypeptide Lip Serum — once the tint’s initial shine started to fade. With one swipe, my look was refreshed. The pigment is all-around buildable, so you can apply an extra layer of tint for a more saturated, high-shine finish.

  • Pigment. Electro Berry and K-Pop Pink are my favorite shades for a pop of color. They deliver a vibrant stain that actually sticks around through a meal or a coffee. Jazzy Jam is my ultimate your-lips-but-better pick. It’s my go-to for an evened-out, natural look. The brighter the shade, the longer the stain lasted.

  • Staying power. The brighter shades lasted through my morning coffee, water breaks, snacks, and meals. However, the darker, more muted shades might not leave a noticeable stain (though if you’re looking for something ultra-subtle, this might actually be a benefit).

  • Flavor/scent. I very much appreciated that the flavor and scent are light and pleasant, not chemical-y.

Sidenotes...

  • It is highly recommended that you use a mirror to apply the lip tint. Do not rub your lips together to maintain an even layer, and therefore, an even color.

  • Formulas are free of parabens, formaldehydes, phthalates, mineral oil, and other potentially harmful substances.
