Unveils psychiatric hospital for mentally challenged persons

Evangelist Chukwuebuka Obi, founder of the Seraphic Homes Foundation (SHF) and Spiritual Director of the Zion Prayer Movement Outreach, has reaffirmed his lifelong commitment to serving vulnerable Nigerians as the foundation expands its humanitarian projects across Imo and Anambra states.

Speaking during a media chat on Saturday, 15 November, Obi said helping people remains his core purpose, revealing that he owns no personal home despite building large-scale facilities for the poor.

“This is my life. I love helping people,” he said. “If I told you that I don’t have a house of my own, you wouldn’t believe it. Yet, I am building structures worth billions.”

He traced his passion for charity to childhood, recalling how he shared food with those in need long before he understood the concept of humanitarian work. The Seraphic Homes Foundation, he said, now operates the first Old People’s Home and Orphanage in Imo State, as well as a newly commissioned free-treatment psychiatric hospital in Aguleri, Anambra State.

Obi explained that the hospital was established to address the neglect of mentally challenged people in Nigeria, noting that the facility provides diagnosis, medication, rehabilitation, accommodation and welfare at no cost. The centre is fully staffed by medical professionals and operates without government funding.

“All our workers are paid,” he said, adding that while some individuals donate supplies, the foundation does not solicit forced contributions and declines cooked food.

He acknowledged appealing to the Anambra State Government for support but said SHF continues to finance its operations independently.

According to him, rescued individuals are first stabilised medically before being prepared for reintegration through vocational training or other support schemes. He dismissed claims of community resistance, stating that residents often celebrate SHF’s rescue missions.

Obi said he remains unfazed by criticism, particularly online. “There is nothing you will do that people won’t misinterpret. But whether negative reports come or not, it won’t stop me.”

Looking ahead, he revealed that SHF will commission a free delivery home at Easter next year, providing maternity services at no cost. He expressed hope that the foundation’s work will continue long after him.
