Getting rid of pests like cockroaches, rats, and bedbugs can be frustrating, especially when they keep coming back despite using sprays and traps. Surprisingly, salt a common kitchen item can play a role in controlling or deterring these nuisances, though it’s not always a one-step miracle solution.

For cockroaches, salt acts as a natural deterrent. Mixing salt with a little sugar creates a bait: the sugar attracts the roaches while the salt dehydrates them. Sprinkle this mixture in areas where cockroaches usually hide, like under sinks, behind appliances, and in cracks.

Over time, the salt dries them out, weakening and eventually killing them.

When it comes to rats, salt can be harmful if ingested in large quantities. A mixture of salt and baking soda with a bit of food can be tempting to them. Once consumed, the salt dehydrates the rat from the inside, and the baking soda reacts with stomach acid, causing internal discomfort.

However, this method should be used cautiously, especially if pets are around.

For bedbugs, salt alone isn’t strong enough to kill them outright, but it can serve as a barrier. Sprinkling salt around bed legs and along mattress seams may help reduce movement, though it’s more effective when combined with other treatments like diatomaceous earth.

While salt may not completely eliminate pests instantly, it’s a safer, natural addition to your pest control routine.
