How mentally unstable man killed soldier in Lagos — Army

The Nigerian Army has confirmed the death of a soldier who was attacked and killed by a mentally unstable man in the Imota area of Lagos State.

A video of the incident circulated online earlier in the week, prompting the 81 Division to issue a statement explaining what happened. Acting Deputy Director Army Public Relations, 81 Division, Lieutenant Colonel Musa Yahaya, said the soldier was part of a team deployed for internal security in the area.

“The Headquarters, 81 Division Nigerian Army has noted the viral video regarding the unfortunate death of a soldier at Ikorodu general area of Lagos State. Without prejudice to the ongoing investigation into the incident, it is necessary to provide preliminary information on the circumstances surrounding the incident,” he said.

According to the army, the soldier was attacked on 16 November 2025 around 4 pm when trying to calm a chaotic situation.

“One of the soldiers deployed for internal security duty in the Imota area of Ikorodu while attempting to de-escalate a chaotic situation was attacked by a mentally unstable individual. The attacker struck the soldier on the head with a heavy log, causing severe injury,” the statement added.

Other soldiers at the scene intervened, neutralised the attacker and recovered the soldier’s weapon. The victim was taken to Ikorodu General Hospital but was pronounced dead.

The army said he was later buried according to Islamic rites, with his commanding officer and other personnel present.

“The 81 Division Nigerian Army has conveyed condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of the deceased soldier. We pray for the repose of his soul and appreciate his service to the nation. The Division has also instituted an investigation into the incident,” Yahaya added.

He urged the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities and also appealed for responsible reporting while the investigation continues.
