New Data Shows When Exactly You Should Ask Your Matches Out

How Long Should You Wait Before Asking for a Date on a Dating App?
The Story Are men and women operating on different clocks when it comes to first dates? That’s a question that arises when you take a peek at a recent dating survey from Hily, a dating app that asked 1,600 Gen Z and millennial Americans about their preferences when it comes to how much conversation they want to have before a first date. RELATED: When Should I Ask For A Date Online? The Snapshot The study turned up a pretty interesting trend: It appears that men and women have distinctly different expectations of how long you should keep messaging a match before asking them out. RELATED: Golden Rules for Asking Women Out While guys were raring to go, women were definitely a bit more cautious. While just 8 percent of guys (about 1 in 12) would want to talk for over a week before asking for a date, 32 percent of women (about 1 in 3) felt that that was a sensible amount of time — meaning that response was 4 times as popular with women as with men. Meanwhile “I ask them out right after matching” also picked up 8 percent with the men, while for women it came in at only 1 percent of responses. The trend seemed to hold across the board — men preferred the three shorter options, and women the three longer ones. The Lesson While guys often feel like they’re expected to move dating conversations forward towards an in-person meeting, that sense can sometimes translate into pushing for a date before any conversational chemistry has taken root. For some women, that can feel like they’re being rushed and asked to pass judgment on something too hastily. Of course, that’s not the case for everyone, but those who prefer to meet sooner rather than later might express that in their profiles with a line in their bio or a prompt response.
