How Dolly Parton Influenced Me

I have lived about 11 miles from Dolly Parton for many years, but I have never met her. Still, like millions of others, I feel as though I know her. Her music, humor, generosity, and unmistakable personality have made her one of the most familiar people in America and the world.

I cannot claim that Dolly influenced me through personal conversations or a close relationship. Her influence has come from observing the way she has lived. She has demonstrated that extraordinary success does not have to produce arrogance, that deeply held convictions do not require hostility, and that a person can remain connected to humble beginnings while reaching heights few ever attain.

Here are seven ways Dolly Parton influenced me.

1. Kindness Is Never Wrong

Kindness is sometimes dismissed as weakness, particularly in a culture that rewards outrage and confrontation. Dolly has shown us something different. She treats people with dignity, including those who disagree with her.

She does not appear to ask whether someone has earned her kindness. She simply chooses to be kind. That approach may not generate as much attention as anger, but it leaves a far greater legacy.

2. Generosity Is a Way of Life

Dolly’s generosity is not limited to an occasional gift or highly publicized contribution. It is part of who she is. Her commitment to childhood literacy through the Imagination Library is perhaps the best-known example, but it is hardly the only one.

True generosity is more than writing a check. It is a disposition toward life. Generous people continually ask how their resources, influence, and opportunities can benefit others. Dolly reminds me that success creates responsibility.

3. Joy Is Contagious

Dolly seems to bring joy into almost every room, interview, and performance. Her laughter is infectious, and her humor is often directed at herself. She understands that people are drawn to those who make life feel a little lighter.

Joy does not mean ignoring pain. Dolly’s songs often acknowledge heartbreak, poverty, disappointment, and loss. Her joy is powerful precisely because it does not deny hardship. It rises above it.

4. Faithfulness Is Measured in Decades, Not Moments

We often celebrate dramatic acts of commitment while overlooking the quiet faithfulness demonstrated over a lifetime. Dolly’s story is one of enduring loyalty—to her family, her roots, her craft, her commitments, and her faith.

Anyone can appear faithful for a season. The real test comes through years of changing circumstances, growing influence, unexpected disappointments, and new opportunities. Faithfulness is not proven in a single moment. It is revealed over time.

5. Never Forget Where You Came From

Dolly has achieved international fame, yet she continues to identify closely with the mountains of East Tennessee and the poverty of her childhood. She does not treat her background as something to hide or overcome. She treats it as part of the story that formed her.

Our beginnings do not have to limit our future, but neither should success cause us to become embarrassed by them. Gratitude grows when we remember where we started and the people who helped us along the way.

6. Humility and Confidence Can Coexist

Dolly knows she is talented. She does not pretend otherwise. At the same time, she rarely seems to take herself too seriously. She can laugh at her appearance, her image, and even her celebrity.

That combination is rare. Confidence without humility becomes arrogance. Humility without confidence can become timidity. Dolly demonstrates that we can recognize our gifts, use them boldly, and still avoid believing that we are more important than everyone else.

7. Success Creates Responsibility

Dolly could have viewed her achievements as permission to withdraw into a private and comfortable life. Instead, she has repeatedly used her platform to serve other people.

The question is not simply, “What have I achieved?” A better question is, “What will I do with what I have been given?” Influence, wealth, knowledge, and opportunity are not merely rewards to enjoy. They are resources to steward.

I have lived only 11 miles from Dolly Parton for many years, but I never met her. Other than her major public appearances, I never saw her in person. It is amazing that someone I never knew personally influenced me so profoundly.

Like millions of others, I miss Dolly Parton.

I really do miss her.
