Here’s what CM Punk said when a WWE higher-up told him not to dress like Macho Man

WWE uploaded a pretty neat video to YouTube today where CM Punk breaks down the reasoning behind his ring gear from many important moments and matches throughout his career. Check it out for yourself.

The story I liked best is the one where CM paid homage to “Macho Man” Randy Savage after the all-time great star died in 2011.

“Unfortunately, just before this picture, the legendary Randy “Macho Man” Savage passed away. So I wanted to pay homage to a classic pair of gear. Two-fold, really. Pink looks great on me, and this is an homage to the gear he wore at WrestleMania 3 taking on Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat. Now, I commissioned my gear-maker at this time to make this gear. And I won’t name names, but somebody very high in the office walked past and saw it, and found me and said, ‘Do not wear that gear on television.’ And I said, ‘You got it [with a thumbs up.]’ And I wore the gear on television. ‘Cause that’s what I do. I’m gonna pay homage to Randy Savage, whether you like it or not.”

Punk goes on to explain that as a hardcore fan of pro wrestling, Savage was always the guy who he felt belonged in Hulk Hogan’s top spot in WWF. His passion for Savage in that regard is similar to how a lot of wrestling fans got behind Punk in a big way when they thought he should be in John Cena’s top spot in WWE circa 2011.

Punk tells some other interesting stories about his ring gear that include wearing Cody Rhodes’ OVW ring trunks during his current WWE run, what Husky Harris aka Bray Wyatt said to him after Nexus failed and he was sent back down to developmental, his prediction that the Money in the Bank 2011 main event match against Cena will be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame, going with a Wolverine look to take on The Hulk in 2013, and more.

Which piece of CM Punk ring gear (and/or his story related to it) is your favorite one? Let me know in the comments below, Cagesiders.
