Hamburger SV secure loan deal for Otele from Basel

Hamburger SV have completed the loan signing of winger Philip Otele from Swiss side FC Basel.

The deal includes an option for HSV to make the transfer permanent at the end of the season. Otele, who joined Basel less than a year ago, will wear the number 27 shirt during his spell in Hamburg.

The 26-year-old arrives with an impressive attacking record, having scored 18 goals and registered eight assists in 53 competitive appearances for Basel. 

His productivity and direct style were key factors behind HSV’s decision to bring him in as they look to strengthen their wide options for the second half of the campaign.

Hamburg sporting director Claus Costa spoke highly of the right-footed winger, describing him as an ideal fit for the club.

“Philip is a textbook winger,” Costa told the club’s official website. “He possesses a high degree of creativity and a real goal threat. He plays with great courage on the ball and often looks for the most direct route to goal with his dribbling. Furthermore, Philip is in good match rhythm and in top form. He has already had a remarkable career path, where he had to work hard for everything he achieved.”

Costa added that the club is delighted Otele chose HSV for the next step of his career, noting the player’s hunger to test himself in Germany.

Otele, Hamburg’s fourth winter signing after Damion Downs, Sander Tangvik, and Albert Grønbæk, expressed his excitement about the move.

He said: “It’s a proud moment for me, I didn’t really need any convincing because HSV and the Volksparkstadion are fantastic. The support from the fans is enormous. I can’t wait to get started.”
