Google Introduces Disco, an AI Tool That Turns Browser Tabs Into Custom Apps

Google has introduced a new AI-powered browser experiment called Disco, designed to help users turn their open browser tabs into custom, task-focused web applications.

Announced on Thursday, Disco is powered by Google’s Gemini AI and introduces a feature called GenTabs. The tool analyzes what users are browsing across multiple tabs and proactively suggests interactive apps that can help them complete related tasks more efficiently.

Disco is Google’s latest attempt to bring artificial intelligence deeper into the web browsing experience, moving beyond simple chat-based assistance.

What Is Google Disco?

Google Disco is an experimental AI product built for the web that helps users create lightweight web apps directly from their browsing activity.

Instead of manually switching between tabs or copying information into other tools, Disco uses Gemini AI to understand what a user is researching and automatically suggests helpful applications, known as GenTabs.

Users can also build their own GenTabs by simply describing what they want in natural language.

How GenTabs Work

GenTabs are AI-generated mini web apps created based on your open tabs and browsing history.

For example:

  • If you are studying a topic, GenTabs may suggest an interactive app that visualizes concepts or summarizes key ideas.
  • If you are browsing recipes, it could generate a meal-planning app.
  • If you are researching travel destinations, it may help you organize an itinerary or compare locations.

Once a GenTab is created, users can continue refining it by giving written instructions, such as adding new features or adjusting the layout.

Google says all generated content in GenTabs will include links back to the original sources used.

Powered by Gemini 3

Disco runs on Gemini 3, Google’s latest AI model, which allows it to understand context across multiple tabs instead of just the page you are currently viewing.

The AI also pulls from a user’s Gemini chat history, enabling more personalized and relevant app suggestions.

How Disco Differs From AI Browsers

While companies like Perplexity and OpenAI are building standalone AI browsers, Google is taking a different approach.

Instead of replacing Chrome, Google is embedding AI directly into the browsing experience. Disco builds on this strategy by focusing on how users interact with multiple tabs rather than single web pages.

Availability and Access

Disco is currently in early testing and only available to a small group of users through Google Labs.

Interested users can join a waitlist to download the app, which will initially be available on macOS. Google says ideas tested in Disco could later appear in other major Google products.

GenTabs is described as Disco’s first feature, with more AI-powered tools expected over time.

Google Disco highlights how AI is evolving from simple assistants into tools that actively reshape how people research, plan, and learn on the web.
