Google Expands Call Recording Feature to Pixel 6 and Newer Devices

Google is now rolling out its Call Recording feature to Pixel 6 and newer devices, including models that don’t support its more advanced Gemini Nano-powered Call Notes feature available on the latest Pixel 9 and Pixel 10. The rollout was first spotted by 9to5Google and confirms Google’s September announcement about expanding access to this feature.

Call Recording is available once users update their Phone by Google app and install the November Pixel Feature Drop, according to Android Authority. The feature has been confirmed to work on devices like the Pixel 10 Pro and Pixel 10 Pro Fold after updating.

Unlike Call Notes which uses AI to transcribe conversations and summarize key points—Call Recording offers a simpler tool: it records audio from calls as raw sound files. These are stored directly on your device and can be transcribed later using external apps or services.

How to Enable Call Recording on Pixel

To turn on call recording, open the Phone app and go to:

Settings > Call Assist > Call Recording

From there, you have the option to:

  • Manually start recordings during calls
  • Automatically record specific numbers or calls from unknown contacts
  • Choose how long recordings are retained (7, 14, or 30 days — or indefinitely)

Before your first recording, Google will walk you through the setup, including downloading audio prompts required to notify all parties that the call is being recorded—important for legal compliance in many regions.

Device Compatibility

  • Pixel Devices: Pixel 6 and newer models running Android 14 or later
  • Non-Pixel Devices: Phones with the Google Phone app installed can use call recording if they run Android 9 or newer

This update brings a useful tool to millions of Pixel users, especially in regions where call recording is legally permitted and commonly needed for personal or business use.
