Ghana’s Amed Sama Wins Bronze at Swiss Open Taekwondo Tournament

Ghanaian taekwondo athlete Amed Sama has secured a bronze medal for Ghana at the 2026 Swiss Open in St. Gallen, Switzerland, finishing third in the men’s heavyweight division.

Sama represented Ghana at the international tournament, which ran from September 4 to 6, 2026, at the Athletik Zentrum St. Gallen in St. Gallen. The competition was organised by Swiss Taekwondo and Taekwondo St. Gallen and sanctioned by World Taekwondo.

According to information shared following his campaign, Sama competed in the over-74kg category and finished in third place to claim the bronze medal, marking a notable achievement for the Ghanaian athlete on the international stage.

The 2026 Swiss Open brought together competitors across cadet, junior, senior and Para Taekwondo divisions. The tournament featured separate ranking events, with the Cadet and Junior competitions operating as an E2 event for European Taekwondo Union ranking points, while the Senior competition was a G1 event offering World Taekwondo ranking points.

The senior competition was held on Sunday, September 6, with men’s divisions ranging from under 54kg through to +87kg.

The Swiss Open was also notable for its expanded format, including the introduction of the Swiss Challenge, which gave athletes eliminated in their opening bout an additional opportunity to compete in a separate single-elimination tournament. The initiative was designed to increase competition time and provide athletes with greater international experience.

For Sama, the tournament provided an opportunity to test himself against international opposition and return home with a podium finish.

He had travelled from Accra to Switzerland ahead of the competition, with arrangements for his departure completed before he left Ghana. Supporters were also present to see him off at Kotoka International Airport.

Following his bronze-medal performance, Sama is expected to return to Ghana on Monday, September 7, arriving at Kotoka International Airport at approximately 7:30 a.m. aboard an ITA Airways flight.

His achievement adds to Ghana’s presence on the international taekwondo scene and provides a positive boost for the country’s combat sports community.

The Swiss Open itself was a significant international event, with official tournament information listing 862 registered competitors and confirming its status as a G1-ranked competition in St. Gallen.

Sama’s bronze medal therefore represents more than a personal achievement. It is another indication of the potential within Ghanaian taekwondo and the ability of its athletes to compete for honours on international platforms.

As he returns home from Switzerland, attention will now turn to how Sama can build on his podium finish and continue Ghana’s push for greater recognition in international taekwondo.
