The GCC Statistical Centre’s 2024 education report reveals rapid growth across the bloc’s education sector, with 10.9 million students enrolled in general education and nearly 940,000 teachers, driven by private sector expansion and rising female participation.

RIYADH: The Gulf is investing heavily in its future, and the numbers prove it. A new report from the GCC Statistical Centre has revealed rapid and sustained growth across the education sector in all six GCC countries, with rising student enrolments, a growing teaching workforce, and a private education sector that is expanding at a pace that is reshaping the regional landscape.

The Education Statistics in GCC Countries 2024 report shows that total student enrolment in general education reached approximately 10.9 million in the 2023/2024 academic year, up from around 10.4 million in 2018/2019, representing an average annual growth rate of 0.8 per cent over five years. Students now account for 17.7 per cent of the total GCC population, a figure that underlines just how central education has become to the region’s demographic and economic story.

The public sector remains the backbone of GCC education, accommodating around 7.6 million students or 70.2 per cent of total enrolment. But the private sector is where the momentum lies. Private school enrolment grew at an average annual rate of 4.8 per cent over the same period, compared to a slight decline of 0.6 per cent in public education, reflecting a significant and accelerating shift toward private institutions across the region.

On gender, the figures tell an encouraging story. Female students represented 49.5 per cent of total enrolment, with their numbers growing at an average annual rate of 2.3 per cent, well ahead of the 0.4 per cent growth rate recorded for male students. The gender balance in GCC classrooms is moving steadily toward parity.

The teaching workforce has grown even faster. Total teacher numbers reached approximately 940,100 in the 2023/2024 academic year, an increase of around 169,000 compared to 2018/2019, representing an average annual growth rate of 4 per cent. Female teachers dominate the profession, accounting for 63.8 per cent of the total teaching workforce, a figure that reflects the growing and indispensable role of women across GCC education systems.

School education, encompassing general education, adult education, and literacy programmes, employs around 842,000 teachers, while early childhood education accounts for approximately 98,100 teaching staff.

Beyond the headline numbers, the report points to sustained government investment in educational infrastructure, the development of higher education systems, and overseas scholarship programmes designed to produce qualified GCC talent across a wide range of fields. Digital transformation, future skills development, and curriculum alignment with global economic and technological shifts are also identified as key priorities as GCC countries work to strengthen the international competitiveness of their education systems.

The message is clear: the Gulf is not just building skylines. It is building the generation that will shape what comes next.
