Gamble as Trump Abandons Europe With Middle East Becoming Top Priority

President Donald Trump intensified the movement of U.S. military forces on February 18, with a large force moving from European bases toward the Middle East.

In images shared by several military news outlets, President Donald Trump has opted to finally accelerate his preparations for possible operations linked to the ongoing confrontation with Iran by sending the troops closer to Tehran.

Trump confirmed that these deployments were part of a larger plan designed to protect American personnel and prepare for potential retaliatory steps if Iranian forces escalated their activities.

U.S-Iran Unforgiving Past

The deployment comes at a time when the U.S -Iran situation is at one of its most tense moments, with ongoing talks in Oman bearing little fruit.

The main issue is a lack of trust between the two nations, with both parties exchanging threats if negotiations fail.

The past between the United States and Iran remains unforgiving because every new negotiation is shaped by earlier shocks that neither side has forgotten.

Trust broke after the U.S. withdrew from the 2015 nuclear deal in 2018, leaving Iran convinced that U.S commitments can be reversed without warning.

That distrust grew deeper after U.S‑Israeli strikes on Iranian nuclear sites in 2025, an event Iran says still hangs over every new round of talks.

During current discussions, the U.S has positioned carriers and warships near Iran, which the nation sees as a threat instead of diplomacy.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Tehran lost trust in the U.S and believes negotiations cannot succeed under pressure or fear of force.

Regional Reactions to Trump’s Deployments

Regional governments are reacting with concern as the United States moves more military forces toward the Middle East.

Gulf states warn that the buildup could spark a wider war, saying any U.S–Iran clash would quickly pull them in because fighting would spread across shared waters and trade routes.

Iran says the deployments prove Washington is negotiating under threat, arguing that talks cannot succeed while U.S carriers, warships, and drones operate close to its coast.

Iranian officials call the U.S posture a pressure tactic that increases the risk of miscalculation.

Shipping tensions have also increased after Iran conducted live-fire drills and temporarily restricted parts of the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil route, causing concern among energy-importing states.

Oman is continuing its mediation role and is urging both sides to keep talks alive despite the troop movements.

Israel is pushing for a tougher U.S position and wants Iran’s missile program included in negotiations, reflecting its security concerns.

Iranian-aligned groups such as Hezbollah have warned they would treat any attack on Iran as a wider regional conflict, raising the risk of strikes on U.S bases and allies.

Israel on Alert

Israel has raised its own military readiness, increasing air defence alerts and reinforcing northern and southern fronts amid fears that Iran-aligned groups such as Hezbollah could retaliate if Iran is attacked.

Israel has strongly backed the U.S military buildup, arguing that increased pressure is necessary to stop Iran’s nuclear and missile programs.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said Iran is closer than ever to weapons capability and warned that time for diplomacy is running out.

Israeli security planners believe any direct U.S–Iran clash would quickly expand into a multi-front conflict, potentially involving Lebanon, Syria and Gaza, which is why they continue to coordinate closely with Trump’s administration on intelligence and missile defence.

Israeli officials support a tougher negotiating framework that includes limits on uranium enrichment, long-range missiles and support for regional armed groups.

They view U.S force deployments as a deterrent that reduces the chance of a surprise Iranian escalation.
