  • Ford has filed a patent for a projector screen that can be deployed from the F-150 Lightning’s frunk.
  • This follows Rivian’s patent for a projector screen deployable from the R1T’s gear tunnel.
  • As with all patents, there’s no guarantee these features will be implemented in future F-150 Lightning models.

Ford has filed to patent a large projector screen that can be housed within the frunk of the Ford F-150 Lightning, potentially making it the perfect companion for overnight adventures or even tailgate (or frunk?) parties.

The patent discovered by Motorauthority was made through the United States Patent and Trademark Office and depicts a large screen that could extend out from a case housed towards the rear of the frunk. Additionally, a small projector could be mounted to the underside of the pickup’s front grille to be used with the screen.

This isn’t the first time an automaker has patented an intriguing projector setup for an electric pickup truck. Late last year, Rivian filed a patent for a large projector screen that could be used within the R1T’s gear tunnel. A special draw housing the projector and wireless speakers was also depicted in patent images. Whereas the display from Ford’s recent patent is probably less than 40 inches in size, the screen of the R1T shown was at least double the size.

It’s reasonable to assume that like Rivian’s design, Ford’s projector setup would run entirely off the pickup’s large battery pack.

Ford has filed several other frunk-related patents for its EVs in recent months. In one case, the F-150 Lightning was depicted with a climate-controlled frunk that included a special cooler box, a pull-down shade for the frunk, and a bench that would double as a work surface.

As always, it’s important to note that just because Ford has patented various different features for the F-150 Lightning’s frunk, that doesn’t mean we’ll actually see these features hit the market.
