From Supporting Star to Game Changer: Why Oluwakemi Adegbuyi Is Nigeria’s Biggest Weapon Against Benin

As Nigeria’s Flamingos prepare for a decisive showdown against Benin Republic in the final round of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup qualifiers, much of the spotlight has understandably fallen on prolific captain Harmony Chidi. Yet behind the goals and headlines, another young star has steadily built a reputation that could prove just as decisive — Oluwakemi Adegbuyi.

The FC Robo Queens forward heads into Saturday’s first-leg clash at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne in impressive form after playing a major role in Nigeria’s emphatic 11-0 aggregate demolition of Guinea. Adegbuyi scored three goals across both legs, combining intelligent movement, sharp finishing and creativity to establish herself as one of the Flamingos’ most influential attacking players.

While Chidi’s five-goal haul grabbed most of the attention, Adegbuyi’s all-round performances have earned praise within the coaching crew led by Akeem Busari. Her ability to drift into dangerous spaces, link midfield with attack and create opportunities for teammates has added another dimension to Nigeria’s free-flowing style.

The youngster has also carried that impressive form into the Flamingos’ series of preparatory friendlies. Nigeria remained in camp after dispatching Guinea, engaging in several competitive matches designed to maintain fitness, improve tactical cohesion and sharpen match readiness ahead of the Benin encounter.

For Adegbuyi, the timing could hardly be better.

With only two matches separating Nigeria from another appearance at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, she has an opportunity to further cement her status as one of the country’s brightest emerging talents.

Benin Republic, however, are expected to provide a sterner examination. The Young Amazons booked their place in the final qualifying round after eliminating Sierra Leone 5-1 on aggregate, demonstrating growing confidence and organisation that could test Nigeria’s attack.

Despite Nigeria entering the fixture as overwhelming favourites, the Flamingos know qualification cannot be taken for granted. Knockout football often rewards discipline and efficiency, and Busari’s side will be keen to establish a healthy advantage before the return leg in Lomé.

Adegbuyi’s pace, composure and eye for the final pass could therefore become decisive.

The Flamingos remain one of Africa’s most successful teams at this level, having won the bronze medal at the 2022 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in India before reaching another World Cup campaign in Morocco. With the 2026 tournament also set to be hosted by Morocco from October 17 to November 8, Nigeria are aiming to extend their remarkable consistency on the global stage.

If Saturday unfolds as many expect, Harmony Chidi may once again find the back of the net.

But do not be surprised if it is Oluwakemi Adegbuyi who quietly dictates the rhythm, unlocks Benin’s defence and takes another giant step from promising youngster to Nigeria’s next football sensation.
