From Healthcare Reformer to Professor of Medicine: The Inspiring Rise of Professor Adaeze Oreh

The journey of Professor Adaeze Oreh to the prestigious rank of Professor of Medicine has been described by admirers as a fulfilment of long-held prayers and aspirations nurtured by her parents, former Supreme Court Justice Mary Odili and Dr. Peter Odili, a former Governor of Rivers State.

A distinguished Consultant Family Physician, global health advocate, policy strategist, and former Commissioner for Health in Rivers State, Prof. Oreh’s elevation marks another major milestone in a career defined by public service, innovation, and impact in healthcare delivery across Nigeria and Africa.

Widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s leading voices in health systems strengthening and universal health coverage, Prof. Oreh has spent more than two decades shaping healthcare policy, medical education, blood transfusion systems, and public health advocacy both locally and internationally.

Before serving as Health Commissioner in Rivers State, she held strategic national roles including Country Director of Planning, Research and Statistics at the National Blood Service Commission (NBSC), where she played a pivotal role in the processes leading to the enactment of the National Blood Service Commission Act 2021. She also secured international support for innovative blood transfusion technology aimed at addressing blood shortages in Nigeria.

Her professional profile cuts across academia, health governance, and international development. She previously served as Senior Health Policy Adviser in Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Health and as an Adjunct Senior Lecturer at Baze University, where she taught Epidemiology, Health Policy and Planning, and Contemporary Issues in Public Health.

Prof. Oreh is also a Senior Fellow for Global Health at the Aspen Institute and a Fellow of the West African College of Physicians. Her influence in global health circles has earned her invitations from institutions such as Harvard University and the Belgian Red Cross-Flanders to contribute to research and policy initiatives on blood services in Africa.

Academically accomplished, she holds an MBBS degree from University of Nigeria, master’s degrees from Imperial College London and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, alongside several leadership and public policy certifications from globally renowned institutions including University of Oxford and Harvard Kennedy School. She is also awaiting presentation of her doctoral thesis in Global Health at the University of Groningen.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Prof. Oreh emerged as one of Nigeria’s most visible public health communicators, participating in dozens of media engagements and publishing numerous editorials to educate citizens on the evolving global crisis.

Through her humanitarian platform, Kaibeya Care Foundation Africa, she has continued to champion voluntary medical outreach, education support, maternal health advocacy, and youth empowerment initiatives across underserved communities in Northern Nigeria and other parts of West Africa.

Her tenure as Commissioner for Health in Rivers State was marked by sweeping reforms and notable achievements. Under her leadership, the state launched the Rivers State Contributory Health Protection Programme, revived emergency ambulance services, expanded medical oxygen production, strengthened residency training, increased healthcare workforce development, and advanced digitalisation within the health sector.

She also spearheaded projects including zonal hospitals, a drug rehabilitation centre, upgrades to psychiatric healthcare infrastructure, and new general hospitals across the state. Rivers State equally secured the Primary Healthcare Leadership Challenge award for three consecutive years under her watch.

An accomplished researcher and prolific writer, Prof. Oreh has authored more than 125 publications focusing on healthcare systems, infectious diseases, public health policy, and primary healthcare. Her work has attracted international citations from scholars and researchers across Africa, Europe, Asia, and Australia.

Her contributions have earned her multiple honours and recognitions, including being named among Nigeria’s Most Inspiring Women, African Mental Health Advocate of the Year, and one of Africa’s Most Influential People of African Descent for Philanthropy and Social Impact.

In 2025, she was listed among ThisDay Newspaper’s “50 Nigerian Power Women” alongside notable figures such as Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Amina J. Mohammed, and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.

Her recent TEDx Abuja presentation titled “Accessible Quality Healthcare – A Doorway to Improved Wellbeing, Opportunity, Empowerment, and a Better Future” further underscored her growing reputation as one of Africa’s leading healthcare reformers and thought leaders.
For many observers, the conferment of the title of Professor of Medicine on Adaeze Oreh is not only a personal achievement but also recognition of years of dedication to healthcare transformation, academic excellence, and humanitarian service.
