Fresh Crisis Hits LP As Abure, Apapa Kick After A New Chairman Was Appointed

The Lamidi Apapa faction of the Labour Party has raised objections to the Nigeria Labour Congress’ appointment of an interim chairman for the party in Gombe State.

The faction disagreed with the development and described it as unacceptable.

Spokesperson Abayomi Arabambi, in a telephone interview, rejected the arrangement, asserting that the NLC lacked the authority to impose individuals on the party. Arabambi emphasized, “The NLC political commission is not a party. We intend to take very drastic constitutional action against them.”

Similarly, the National Publicity Secretary of the LP, Obiora Ifoh, echoed Arabambi’s sentiments, stating, “We are unaware of that development because the Labour Party has its leadership in Gombe State.” Ifoh clarified that Abdulsalam, the purported interim chairman, was a former state chairman ousted for alleged anti-party activities.

The Julius Abure faction also weighed in, indicating that it was uninformed about the appointment and affirmed the presence of a substantive state chairman in Gombe. Ifoh further revealed that the Abure-led NWC was not informed of the recent development.

The conflict between the NLC and the LP leadership has escalated recently, with tensions mounting over allegations of unilateral governance by LP National Chairman, Julius Abure.

Despite the NLC’s endorsement of Sani Abdulsalam as interim chairman, dissenting factions within the LP maintain their stance against external interference in party affairs.
