The Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria (FRC) has participated in the 56th Annual Accountants’ Conference of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), bringing together accounting professionals, policymakers, business leaders and other stakeholders to discuss the role of financial accountability in strengthening Nigeria’s economy and national security.

The conference, which runs from October 18 to 23, 2026, is holding at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre, Abuja, under the theme, “Beyond Numbers: Strengthening the Economy, Securing the Nation.”

The gathering provides a platform for discussions on financial accountability, institutional integrity, professional excellence and the contribution of the accountancy profession to national development.

Day Two of the conference featured technical sessions and international perspectives on the evolving responsibilities of accountants in promoting economic resilience and strengthening institutions.

The President of the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC), Mr. Jean Bouquot, shared insights into the profession’s role in building resilient economies and stronger institutions, highlighting the importance of sound financial management, effective governance, business sustainability and technological innovation.

The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, also presented Nigeria’s economic priorities and fiscal reforms, examining how the accountancy profession could contribute to sustainable growth and translate policy initiatives into lasting economic and institutional outcomes.

Similarly, the Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, delivered the lead paper on the conference theme, highlighting the relationship between economic strength, national security and the responsibilities of accounting professionals.

Sanwo-Olu challenged accountants to move beyond preparing financial statements to applying reliable information, professional judgement and ethical standards in supporting sound decisions and achieving measurable national development outcomes.

The President and Chairman of Council of ICAN, Hajia Queenleyin Sofurat Segosun, officially opened the conference and delivered the welcome address.

She emphasised the importance of productive enterprises, strong institutions, responsible leadership and accountable management of public resources, noting that the responsibilities of accountants extend beyond financial reporting to the decisions informed by financial information and their wider societal implications.

The FRC delegation participated in the conference’s professional engagements and discussions, while the Council maintained a presence at its registration booth, engaging participants and responding to enquiries from accounting professionals and other stakeholders.

The Council’s participation underscores its commitment to strengthening financial reporting, promoting accountability and upholding professional standards that support investor confidence, institutional effectiveness and sustainable economic development.

The FRC also reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating with ICAN and other stakeholders to strengthen Nigeria’s financial reporting ecosystem and advance practices that serve the public interest and support economic growth.
