Christopher Kolade, a former Nigerian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, expressed his belief that modern-day Nigerian politicians are primarily focused on advancing their personal agendas.

Speaking in an interview with Channels Television as reported by NewsNow, Kolade highlighted the shift in political motivations from the politicians of the past, particularly those of the First Republic who he commended for their dedication to serving the nation even at personal cost.

Reflecting on his own perspective on politics, Kolade shared, “I’ve refrained from engaging in politics due to concerns that the prevalent practices could compromise my values and integrity if I were to become a politician today.”

Comparing the current political landscape with the era of the First Republic, he remarked, “The politicians I encountered during the First Republic genuinely prioritized the interests of Nigeria and were dedicated to national service.”

Kolade’s public service also included leading the Subsidy Re-investment and Empowerment Programme (SURE-P) following his appointment by the Goodluck Jonathan administration in 2012. Despite initial reservations from his associates warning him about potential reputation risks, Kolade accepted the role, emphasizing the importance of stepping up when there is a need.

Recalling the advice he received from a group of mentees who urged him against taking the position, Kolade shared, “They expressed their admiration for me and cautioned against the potential implications, but I believed that someone had to take on the responsibility.”

In 2013, Kolade resigned from his SURE-P leadership role citing age-related limitations and concerns related to corruption and transparency.
