Five Children Die After Fence Collapsed In Maiduguri

Five children have been confirmed dead, while another sustained injuries, following the collapse of a fence in the Bulumkutu area of Maiduguri, Borno State.

The incident was said to have happened at about 8:00 p.m. on Sunday.

Confirming the development on Monday, the Public Relations Officer of the Borno State Police Command, Mr. Nahum Daso, said the injured child was currently receiving medical treatment, while investigations had commenced to determine the cause of the incident.

According to him, the report was received through the Divisional Police Officer of the Bulumkutu Division.

“Yesterday (Sunday), at about 8pm, we received a report through the Divisional Police Officer of the Bulumkutu Division that a fence collapsed on six children.

“Unfortunately, five of the children, all below the age of 16, lost their lives, while one sustained injuries and is currently in the hospital,” Daso told Punch.

He disclosed that the police had launched an investigation to establish how the fence collapsed and to determine whether negligence or other factors were involved.

“The first action by the command is that we have immediately commenced an investigation into the fence, how it fell and other issues surrounding the incident.

“We want to know if there was any act of negligence or other factors involved,” he stated.

He also advised members of the public to adhere strictly to proper building standards and to closely monitor children within their environment to prevent similar tragedies.

“Nevertheless, we are calling on members of the public to be mindful of structural positioning, maintain good structural standards, and keep a close eye on their children,” Daso added.

The incident comes against the backdrop of previous building collapses in Maiduguri linked to heavy rainfall. On July 30 2025, where eight buildings reportedly collapsed following a downpour in parts of the Borno State capital.

The rainfall, which began around 6:15 a.m. and lasted for about three hours, affected areas including Bulumkutu, Abuja, Moduganari, Ngomari, and other riverbank communities, leading to the displacement of several families.

In a statement at the time, Daso said police officers were immediately deployed to assess the situation and secure the affected areas.

“Unfortunately, eight buildings collapsed, but no casualties were recorded,” he had said.
