Fintiri Backs Kanu’s Governor’s Cup, Heart Health Drive in Adamawa

Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, has thrown his administration’s weight behind a proposed statewide Governor’s Cup football tournament and heart-health initiative championed by former Super Eagles captain and global football icon, Kanu Nwankwo.

Kanu and his team visited the Adamawa State Government House in Yola to present plans for the football tournament, which is designed to discover, nurture and promote young football talents across the state’s 21 Local Government Areas.

Receiving the proposal, Governor Fintiri pledged government support for the initiative, particularly its grassroots focus on giving young people in rural communities an opportunity to showcase their footballing abilities.

The governor said Adamawa has abundant football talent, but many promising players lack the exposure, facilities and opportunities needed to attract professional clubs and scouts.

He said the Governor’s Cup would help bridge that gap by taking talent discovery to communities across the state rather than concentrating opportunities in major urban centres.

Fintiri, however, insisted that the talent identification process must be transparent and based strictly on ability.

He directed that politics, personal connections and favouritism must not influence the selection of players, stressing that only genuine talents should emerge from the competition.

The governor also called for the involvement of qualified scouts and professionals to ensure that promising players receive proper assessment and are connected with opportunities to pursue professional football careers.

According to him, the competition is expected to culminate in a grand final at the new stadium being constructed by his administration, which he said is nearing completion.

The governor said the facility would provide a modern platform for sporting activities while improving Adamawa’s capacity to host major competitions and events.

Beyond football, the meeting also produced plans for a public health initiative aimed at raising awareness about cardiovascular diseases in Adamawa.

Kanu proposed a six-kilometre health awareness walk alongside free medical screening for residents, an initiative Governor Fintiri welcomed and pledged to support.

The governor urged residents, particularly those aged 35 and above, to take preventive healthcare seriously by regularly checking their blood pressure and cholesterol levels and paying greater attention to heart health.

Fintiri subsequently directed that a committee be constituted immediately to coordinate preparations for both the Governor’s Cup and the proposed health activities.

Earlier, Kanu said his decision to bring the initiative to Adamawa was influenced by the development taking place across the state under Governor Fintiri.

The former Nigerian international said football had transformed his own life by creating opportunities for him to play at the highest level, adding that he wants young people in Adamawa to have similar opportunities to fulfil their potential.

Kanu explained that the Governor’s Cup would cover all 21 LGAs, with professional scouts expected to monitor the competition and identify players capable of progressing to professional football.

He said the initiative was not merely about winning a trophy but about creating a pathway through which talented young footballers could gain visibility and potentially secure opportunities with professional clubs.

Kanu also pledged the support of his Kanu Heart Foundation for the proposed free medical screening and assistance for people living with heart-related conditions.

He disclosed that the foundation has supported more than 700 open-heart surgeries, underscoring the need for early detection, regular medical examinations and public awareness.

The football icon proposed that the medical activities could be organised around the Governor’s Cup final and the commissioning or opening of the new stadium.

The proposed partnership brings together the Adamawa Government’s investment in youth development and sports infrastructure with Kanu Nwankwo’s football expertise and humanitarian work.

If successfully implemented, the initiative could provide thousands of young people across Adamawa with a pathway into professional football while simultaneously taking heart-health awareness and preventive medical screening to communities across the state.
