Winter is meant for staying in, piling on blankets, and clutching a hot cup of coffee like it’s a life raft. But no matter how cozy you keep your space, the season still finds a way to sneak in. And it almost always comes for your hair first. Between frigid outdoor temps, blasting indoor heat, and those brave (but reckless) post-shower sprints to the train in the cold, moisture doesn’t stand a chance.

Low humidity strips hydration from both your strands and your scalp, leaving everything feeling tight, brittle, and thirsty in a way no beverage could ever fix. Suddenly you’re dealing with breakage, static, split ends, and frizz. Not to mention that annoying itchy scalp sensation that makes you question every product in your shower. Even your usual good-hair-day tricks stop working. The good news? Dry, damaged hair isn’t unsolvable—it just needs a little extra strategy this time of year. Read on for the essential things to know to care for your scalp and keep your hair soft, strong, and hydrated all winter long.

What Causes Dry, Damaged Hair?

Dry, damaged hair is usually the result of a few things teaming up against you. Environmental stress plays a major role. The cold air outside, dry heat inside, and constant friction from hats and scarves all work to suck moisture straight out of your strands. Then there’s everyday styling—like heat tools, frequent coloring, and harsh shampoos—which can all slowly wear the hair down. Even factors like stress, dehydration, or not getting enough nutrients can make hair show up as dull and brittle.

What it all comes down to is a weakened cuticle. When hair’s protective outer layer gets compromised, moisture escapes, and strands become fragile and more prone to breakage. That’s why hydration isn’t just helpful—it’s essential. Restoring moisture and protecting it is the key to bringing dry, damaged hair back to life. And keeping it healthy long-term.

Why is Scalp Care So Important?

“The scalp is the foundation of every beautiful hairstyle,” says trichologist and RevAir expert, Ladosha Wright. Shine, movement, volume… all these gorgeous traits come from the scalp. More specifically, they come from the hair follicles, which “perform best when the scalp is clean, balanced and calm.” That’s why keeping the scalp healthy is the number one priority when it comes to keeping your hair looking like you just stepped out of a red-carpet glambot.

The key? Avoiding scalp overload. Wright notes that just like any other part of your skin, the scalp “releases sweat, produces oil, sheds dead skin cells, and collects everything you put on it.” That includes your daily shampoos, conditioners, hair mists, oils and whatever else may be sitting in your bathroom cabinet. When this mix isn’t removed thoroughly, that’s when dry, damaged hair occurs. And once the scalp’s natural balance is off… well, “Hair can’t look or behave its best, no matter how many products you pile on top,” says Wright.

6 Care Tips to Keep Your Scalp Healthy

1. Thoroughly cleanse the scalp

Yes, there is a right and wrong way to wash your hair. Wright recommends combing through your locks to “release shed strands” before even turning on the shower. “Water dilutes the shampoo, making it less effective,” she says. So, removing dying strands is imperative for a fresh, balanced scalp.

Next, part the hair into sections, and “apply shampoo directly along each part,” being sure to really invigorate the scalp using the pads of your fingers (not nails or scrubbers) and rinsing thoroughly. Though those tools can feel satisfying, “they often irritate the scalp without truly cleaning it,” warns Wright. So if the scalp is heavily soiled, a firm finger massage is plenty. If you’re dealing with an excess of building, Wright recommends repeating this two to three times.

2. Don’t use conditioner

Well, at least not on the scalp. Your dry ends still need some love (and a hydrating conditioner or hair mask will do the trick), but coating the scalp with conditioner? That’s a major no-go. Wright recommends applying conditioner “to the ends first, then work upwards” and stopping just short of the scalp.

The goal of conditioner is to smooth and protect the hair shaft. But when it’s applied too close to the scalp, it can backfire—leading to buildup, residue and that heavy, weighed-down feeling. Products like that include coconut water, hyaluronic acid, and olive leaf extract support softness and hydration. Revair’s conditioning products (which include all three) are a regular part of my routine.

3. Exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate

Exfoliation is like pressing a reset button on the scalp. Over time, product buildup, excess oil, dead skin, and dry flakes can clog follicles and throw your scalp out of balance, which makes it harder for healthy hair to grow in strong. A gentle exfoliant helps sweep all of that away, boosting circulation and creating a cleaner, healthier environment at the root. The result is “a refreshed scalp” and “hair that looks cleaner, moves better, holds volume longer, and feels easier to manage,” says Wright.

4. Embrace scalp massages

Scalp massages are one of those feel-good habits that actually do something, especially when dry, brittle hair needs a comeback. Massaging the scalp increases blood flow, which helps deliver oxygen and nutrients to the hair follicles—AKA the building blocks for stronger, healthier strands over time. It also helps loosen buildup, encourage natural oil distribution, and relax tension that can mess with scalp health. (Stress shows up everywhere, including your roots!)

Tools can take this ritual up a notch, too. Manual brushes, gua sha combs, and even electric scalp massagers are designed to exfoliate, boost blood flow, relieve tension, and help with product absorption for healthier hair growth and relaxation.

5. Try a repair treatment

If your hair is feeling like it’s staging a breakage rebellion, a repair treatment is the best secret weapon. These formulas work hard to reinforce weak strands, smooth cuticles, and give your hair a little extra oomph where it needs it most. Take the Vichy Dercos Collagen Peptide 17 Ultra Repairing Treatment, for example. It tackles breakage while repairing multiple signs of damage, leaving hair stronger, fuller, and way more touchable. The best part? You just pop the Pre-Shampoo Treatment on for five minutes, let it work its magic, and then follow up with the shampoo and conditioner. It’s an easy, feel-good step that makes your hair look healthier from root to tip without any fuss—and honestly, your strands will thank you.

6. Add tea tree and rosemary to your routine

It’s all about oils, baby! If your scalp is feeling a little thirsty, adding tea tree and rosemary into your routine is a total game-changer. Tea tree is a natural antibacterial and antifungal hero, helping to calm irritation, balance oil, and keep buildup at bay. Rosemary works to stimulate circulation, encouraging stronger healthier hair growth and giving your scalp a refreshing, tingly boost. Whether you’re using a shampoo, rinse, or scalp oil with these botanicals (a go-to is CÉCRED Scalp Refreshing Spray, which has both!), they make your routine feel spa-like while supporting a scalp that’s happy and hydrated.
