Ferrari F80 Convertible Spied Wearing A Cap To Hide Its Roof

Just like Ferrari did with the hybrid LaFerrari hypercar, a drop-top version of the new F80 is in the works. Recently spied testing in Maranello for the first time, the new F80 Aperta is expected to be even more strictly limited than the Coupe and will inevitably be even more expensive.

This F80 prototype, covered in camouflage, looks nearly identical to the version we’re familiar with. It includes the same front fascia with sharp headlights and large air intakes, as well as the large, motorsport-inspired intakes and vents on the sides. Take a close look at the roof, however, and you may notice it looks a little different.

While the engine cover and the aerodynamic fins at the B-pillars look the same as those of the Coupe, the roof panel itself doesn’t sit flush with the engine cover, hence the prevailing thought that it is a removable piece.

No Folding Mechanism In Sight

For the LaFerrari Aperta, the Italian marque skipped the complicated, heavy folding roof mechanism, instead going with a simple hard panel that could be removed and fit into the front storage area. The same thing could be done on the F80 Aperta, although given the huge vents found in the hood, we’re not convinced there will be anywhere to store the car’s roof. Owners may have to leave the roof at home if they want to enjoy the wind in their hair.

The F80 Aperta will also need to have different doors. Like the LaFerrari, the standard model rocks a set of butterfly doors which include parts of the roof when they open up. As such, the door hinges of the new Aperta will need to be tweaked.

No powertrain changes are expected. As such, the F80 Aperta should carry over the 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V6 working alongside three electric motors for a combined 1,184 hp, coupled to an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. It’s reasonable to assume the Aperta will gain a little bit of weight, but likely not much more than 50 lbs (23 kg).

The name of this new model remains unconfirmed. Earlier this year, it was revealed that Ferrari had filed to trademark the names F80 Targa and F80 Roadster, hinting at two more possibilities.

Our spy photographers understand production of the F80 Aperta could be capped at just 399 units, making it significantly rarer than the Coupe, of which 799 are being made. With this in mind, it can be expected to cost a lot more, likely exceeding $4 million.
