FBI Arrests Nigerian Man Over International Romance Scam

The Federal Bureau of Investigation has arrested a Nigerian man identified as Samuel Ugberaese, popularly known as “Putsammy,” over alleged international romance scam activities.

According to reports, Ugberaese was extradited from Nigeria to the United States to face charges linked to cross-border romance scams that allegedly targeted victims in the U.S. and several other countries.

The United States Department of Justice announced the development in a press release issued on Tuesday, May 19, 2026.

A federal grand jury reportedly returned the indictment against him in January 2021, while United States Magistrate Judge Brian S. Myers ordered that he remain in custody pending trial.

According to court documents, Ugberaese and his alleged accomplices reportedly used romance scam tactics, including false promises and fabricated stories, to manipulate victims into sending them money.

The indictment also alleged that Ugberaese conspired with co-defendant Oluwadamilare Kolaogunbule, a naturalized U.S. citizen, to move money through multiple bank accounts, including accounts linked to supposed export companies, in an attempt to conceal the source and ownership of the funds.

Ugberaese is facing one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and another count of conspiracy to commit money laundering.

If convicted, he could face a maximum sentence of 40 years in prison.

Authorities said several agencies assisted in securing his arrest and extradition, including the Department of Justice’s Office of International Affairs, the South African Police Service, the FBI’s Law Enforcement Attaché Office in Abuja, the Nigerian Ministry of Justice, and the Nigeria Police Force through INTERPOL.

The case is currently being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Adam F. Hulbig.

Meanwhile, photos and videos from Ugberaese’s lavish 2018 wedding have resurfaced online, drawing reactions from social media users over the display of luxury cars, designer fashion items, and expensive lifestyle.
