Sports247 reports that Fasuba, who is now based in the United Kingdom, said he was excited last Friday when he saw Kanyinsola break his Nigerian record that stood solid for 20 years and congratulated the fast-rising youngster for his achievement.

The former sprinter’s commendation came after Ajayi set the new mark of 9.84 seconds on Friday at USA’s National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) East Regionals, which erased Fasuba’s time of 9.85 set in Doha, Qatar in 2006.

Ajayi, a 20-year-old Auburn University sprinter, clocked the time with a legal wind reading of +0.4m/s to win his heat and qualify for the NCAA Championships and moved top of the 2026 world rankings.

It also placed him ahead of Nigeria’s legendary and recent top male sprinters like Chidi Imoh, Seun Ogunkoya, Davidson Ezinwa, Oluyemi Olukayode and Divine Oduduru, which Fasuba believes makes Ajayi capable of achieving an African record soon.

Fasuba, who held the African record for 15 years, recalled, “Two years ago, I predicted that this young talent would be capable of breaking my Nigerian 100m record, and he has done exactly that. Congratulations, Kanyinsola Ajayi.

“Twenty years ago, in Doha, I ran a performance that stood as Nigerian record for two decades and African record for 15 years. To have held those records for that length of time was a great honour and one of the proudest moments of my career.”

Fasuba, whose African record was broken by Kenya’s Ferdinand Omanyala with 9.77 seconds in 2021, added: “What excites me most is not just the record itself, but what it represents. It shows that Nigerian sprinting is progressing.

“(It also shows) that our athletes can compete with the very best in the world. The possibility of Nigeria taking back the African record is now realistic once again, and Kanyinsola has shown that he has the talent to chase that target.”
