Ex-Werder Bremen stars back Boniface to end goal drought

Former Werder Bremen forwards Claudio Pizarro and Martin Harnik have thrown their support behind Victor Boniface, expressing confidence that the Nigerian striker will soon break his goalless spell at the club.

Boniface joined Werder Bremen on a season-long loan from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer but is yet to find the back of the net in nine appearances under head coach Horst Steffen.

Speaking to DeichStube, Harnik said he believes Boniface’s personality and playing style require freedom to flourish.

“Of course, he’s a special guy,” the former Austrian international said. “He’s a character to me that you have to let do. Similar to Max Kruse, he needs as much freedom as possible.

“If you let him off the leash, I believe that he is a really creative player with a lot of joy to play and will also help the team.”

Club legend Claudio Pizarro also encouraged the striker to remain patient and focused, backing him to rediscover his scoring touch.

“He’s in a difficult phase at the moment, but he just has to keep working to show his quality again,” Pizarro said.

“Hopefully, he’ll start at Werder; that would be very important for both sides. When he scores, then hopefully a lot of goals will come.”
