Ernest Kumi intended to resign days before his death – Gary Nimako

Gary Nimako, the Director of Legal Affairs for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has revealed that the late Ernest Kumi, who served as the Member of Parliament for Akwatia, had plans to resign just six days before his unexpected demise.

In January 2025, the Koforidua High Court issued an interim injunction that prevented Kumi from taking the oath of office as MP.

Despite this order, Kumi went ahead with the swearing-in, leading the court to hold him in contempt and issue a warrant for his arrest. However, the Supreme Court later overturned that ruling in June 2025, restoring his standing as a legislator.

Sadly, just a month later, Kumi passed away in July 2025.

During an interview on September 2, Mr. Nimako shared that Kumi had become exhausted from ongoing pressure in his constituency and had confided in him about his desire to leave politics.

“Ernest Kumi said that he wants to resign from Parliament. Are you aware? He said he was tired because of the harassment they were doing to him at the constituency. He was tired, he wants to resign from parliament and go and stay at home,” Mr. Nimako disclosed.

To stress the credibility of his statements, he remarked, “Do you know I am an ex-seminarian. I went to Catholic school to become a Catholic priest. Ask my people who were with me, they will tell you. I will tell the truth to you and the truth will set me free”.

Mr. Nimako further highlighted the distress Kumi experienced before his death: “The gentleman was harassed and over harassed. Six days he died… He said he was tired”.

Kumi’s passing ultimately led to the Akwatia by-election, which was claimed by candidate Bernard Bediako of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
