Enzo Fernandez hints at Chelsea move ahead of Pochettino’s decision

Chelsea news as the Blues midfielder posted a caption on his social media ahead of being dropped by Pochettino

Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez fired a cryptic message onto his social media before being dropped by manager Mauricio Pochettino for their 2-0 win over Sheffield United.

The Argentinian was surprisingly named on the bench after starting in every Premier League match this season and the Blues appeared to struggle without him in the first half. Of the few chances the Blues created early on, none of them came from the midfield pairing of Gallagher and Caicedo but instead wingers Cole Palmer and Mykhailo Mudryk.

It was Palmer that the opener eventually came through as the England international linked up with Raheem Sterling whose darting run into the 18-yard box allowed space in the middle for Palmer to slot the ball home to give the Blues a much-needed lead.

It was then Palmer who provided the assist for the second goal, this time it was Nicolas Jackson’s turn to poke home from close range following a scrappy affair between Conor Gallagher, Sterling and two Blades defenders. After the match, Pochettino highlighted the importance of the result after the inconsistency his side have shown in recent weeks.

He said: “You always need to believe that it must be a really important result for us to try to make us to believe we can do things in a different way. We were talking a lot after Everton and think that we need a drastic change. I think it was important to now confirm that we were in a good way.

Today, I think the team in the first half was a little bit frustrated because we didn’t find a way to break the low block of Sheffield United. At the same time the 11 players were committed with the team, chasing the opponent, trying to get the ball back as soon as possible and trying to not give the option to Sheffield United to create chances.

In the second half I think we fixed different positions and we started to find better possibilities to circulate the ball and stretch the line, Jackson goes into the space. We were aggressive enough but we suffered lack of aggression in the first half because we made a mistake in the way we tried to penetrate but in the second half, with the things we changed, the team found better solutions.”

As for Fernandez, the star eventually did make his way off the bench as he replaced Mudryk with 20 minutes remaining in the match. It’s the lowest amount of minutes he’s played in a Chelsea league match all season, but it’s possible he could be being rested for the midweek clash against Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup.

In his post, he shared a graphic of him promoting this afternoon’s match with the caption: “Proverbios 30:30” with a lion emoji. Proverb 30:30 is a Christian proverb from the Bible and reads as follows: “A lion, mightiest among beasts, who retreats before nothing.”

Whether that’s a message towards Pochettino and his decision to bench him or if it was simply a message to hype up supporters remains unclear but, either way, it seems as though Fernandez will be desperate to start against the Magpies in order to help the Blues reach their first semi-final under the Argentine boss.
