England vs Norway World Cup clash at risk after weather warning issued for Miami

England's World Cup quarter-final against Norway could face disruption after severe weather warnings were issued for Miami ahead of Saturday night's blockbuster showdown.

Thomas Tuchel's side are due to take on Norway at the Hard Rock Stadium for a place in the World Cup semi-finals, but extreme heat and the threat of thunderstorms have cast fresh doubt over whether the match will run without interruption.

The US National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory covering South Florida, warning that temperatures could feel as high as 43C due to a combination of soaring heat and humidity.

The alert comes after a cloud of Saharan dust drifted across the Atlantic and into the region earlier this week, creating hazy conditions and raising concerns for people suffering from allergies or respiratory conditions.

While the dust is expected to contribute to the oppressive conditions, forecasters are also predicting thunderstorms to return before the weekend.

That could prove significant for FIFA, whose safety protocols require matches to be suspended whenever lightning is detected within an eight-mile radius of a stadium.

England have already experienced the impact of those regulations during this tournament.

England have won four of their five World Cup games ahead of their showdown with Norway

Their dramatic last-16 victory over Mexico was delayed by an hour after thunderstorms moved into the area surrounding the Azteca Stadium, forcing players and supporters to wait before kick-off.

France have also been affected by the tournament's weather challenges, with their group-stage encounter against Iraq halted for two hours at half-time because of torrential rain.

Should similar storms develop over Miami on Saturday, England's quarter-final could also be temporarily suspended until conditions are deemed safe.

Even if the weather does not force a delay, players and supporters are still expected to contend with oppressive temperatures throughout the evening.

The National Weather Service warned that the combination of extreme heat and humidity "may cause heat illnesses" and urged anyone spending time outdoors to take precautions.

Officials have advised people to "Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbours."

Meanwhile, earlier this week, England star Morgan Rogers insisted the players were excited about their match with Norway, rather than feeling nervous.

"This is the next biggest game ahead," he said. "For a lot of us, this will be the biggest game we’ve been involved in, especially at a World Cup in the circumstances.

“The drive to make more and to go again is the biggest challenge, but I think it’s a challenge that excites a lot of this group.

“I think that was the message today in our first training session back, that we go for it again, we can still improve and get better.

“That’s the best thing about football. You can always improve on something, it’s never the finished article or the end of anything because there’s a game around the corner that’s going to give us different problems.

“We’ll have to step up in a different way, whether we play differently or whatever that may look like, we’ve got another challenge ahead and that’s the exciting part about being a footballer - it’s never done, it’s never the end.

“You can always change and alter, kind of attack a different challenge. So we’re ready, and we will be ready.”
