Education minister halts GTEC directives after UTAG concerns

The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has ordered the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) to cancel two earlier directives related to post-retirement contracts for senior lecturers in public universities.

The Ministry of Education announced this decision in a statement released on Monday, April 27. The order specifically affects letters that GTEC issued on September 30 and October 1, 2025.

“The Honourable Minister for Education has directed the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) to immediately withdraw its letters… concerning the post-retirement contracts of Academic Senior Members of public universities,” the statement said.

The Minister took this step after holding talks with leaders of the University Teachers Association of Ghana, who had expressed strong concerns about the earlier directives.

According to the Ministry, the withdrawal will create space for deeper engagement before any final decision is made. Authorities want to gather more views and ensure that all key parties contribute to shaping the policy.

“The decision has been taken pending further consultations with relevant stakeholders to ensure that any policy direction… reflects broad consensus, promotes institutional sustainability, and serves the best interests of Ghana’s tertiary education sector,” the statement explained.

Officials say they will continue to involve stakeholders throughout the process. They aim to reach a solution that supports both academic staff and the long-term stability of the education system.

“The Ministry of Education remains committed to a transparent, inclusive, and consultative approach in addressing matters affecting the higher education landscape,” the statement added.
