Nottingham Forest manager Sean Dyche has revealed details of a personal conversation with striker Taiwo Awoniyi following the forward’s long-awaited return to the scoresheet.

Awoniyi ended a year-long Premier League goal drought on Sunday, scoring in Forest’s clash against Brentford at the City Ground.

The goal marked a major milestone for the Nigeria international, who has endured a challenging spell this season.

The striker struggled for form and confidence earlier in the campaign under former manager Nuno Espírito Santo, but Dyche has since handed him a renewed opportunity to prove himself in Forest colours.

Speaking after the game, Dyche explained that his message to Awoniyi was simple and supportive.

“I had a chat with him—nothing heavy—and reminded him to be free,” Dyche said. “He looked free when he came on. He worked very hard and it was a very good finish.”

Dyche also played down the need to revisit Awoniyi’s injury struggles, preferring instead to focus on the present.

“I don’t keep reflecting back. What happened was serious, but it’s about enjoying your football again—what I call professional enjoyment,” he added.

The Forest boss praised Awoniyi’s recent improvement, noting that the striker has looked sharper in training and deserved his chance.

“He’s come back to life. I had no doubt about putting him on,” Dyche said.

The goal could mark a turning point as Awoniyi looks to rebuild momentum and confidence for Nottingham Forest.
