Dessers breaks silence on AFCON injury setback

Cyriel Dessers has spoken for the first time following his injury-enforced withdrawal from the ongoing 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

The striker was forced to return to club duty in Greece last week after suffering a thigh injury during training with Nigeria.

The setback meant Dessers did not feature in any match for the Super Eagles at the tournament.

Super Eagles head coach Éric Chelle confirmed, ahead of Nigeria’s Round of 16 clash with the Mambas of Mozambique, that the forward is expected to be sidelined for between 10 and 12 weeks.

Now back with Panathinaikos, the former Rangers striker took to social media to express his disappointment at missing the remainder of the tournament and a crucial phase of the club season.

“Unfortunately I sustained an injury at AFCON. It’s extremely difficult to accept that I will miss the remainder of the tournament and an important period at Panathinaikos,” Dessers wrote.

“I will be our biggest fan in these weeks, go full in rehab and hopefully we can celebrate a win and goal together soon” he said.

Dessers’ focus turns to recovery as he begins rehabilitation, while the Super Eagles continue their AFCON campaign without him.
