Defence Academy, Centre sign Groundbreaking MoU to ehance cadets operations

The Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) and the Centre for Civilians in Conflict (CIVIC) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at enhancing the capacity of cadets, instructors, and staff in adopting a civilian-centric approach to military operations.

This significant partnership underscores a mutual commitment to integrating the principles of Protection of Civilians (PoC) and Civilian Harm Mitigation (CHM) into the NDA’s curriculum.

Maj.Gen John Ochai, Commandant of the NDA, emphasised the importance of this collaboration, stating that it represented a significant step towards strengthening its relationship with the Centre for Civilians in Conflict.

“It will enhance the capacity of our cadets, who will be the future officers of the Nigerian Armed Forces and our regional allies.

“Their training will now encompass vital civilian protection strategies that are essential in today’s complex operational environments.

Ochai said the MoU outlined a comprehensive framework for cooperation between the two entities, focusing on training modules, workshops, and the introduction of the Technologically Enhanced E-learning Application (TEELA) to elevate the educational experience of cadets.

According to him, the partnership aims to foster a culture of respect for civilian life and rights, equipping future military leaders with the knowledge and skills necessary for responsible conduct in operations.

“CIVIC’s engagement in this initiative is supported by the United Kingdom Foreign and Commonwealth Office’s Integrated Security Fund (ISF) instrument, which underscores the commitment to enhancing civilian protection and harm mitigation in military training and operations.

Saratu Joshua Pindar, the Country Programme Coordinator for CIVIC, expressed gratitude to Major General Ochai for his unwavering support of the initiative.

“We are thankful for the Commandant’s vision and commitment to this collaboration. By sharing our field experience and knowledge, this MoU will not only strengthen the capacity of the NDA’s cadets and instructors but also create a lasting impact on military practices in Nigeria and beyond.”

The MoU process was spearheaded by Mr Julius Nasamu Gaiya on behalf of the Centre for Civilians in Conflict, reflecting the dedication of both organizations to fostering a safer and more accountable military environment.

This partnership marks a pivotal moment in military education, ensuring that the principles of civilian protection are embedded into the training of Nigeria’s future military leaders.
