Deadly Blaze Engulfs Hong Kong’s Wang Fuk Housing Complex, Claims at Least 13 Lives

At least 13 people have died after a major fire swept through three blocks of the Wang Fuk Court housing complex in Hong Kong’s northern Tai Po district on Wednesday, November 26, 2025.

Authorities report that multiple residents were trapped inside their homes while firefighters worked to control the blaze.

The fire started around 14:51 local time (06:51 GMT) at Wang Fuk Court, a large residential estate with eight 31-storey towers. The complex has almost 4,600 residents living in 1,984 apartments, according to the 2021 census. At the time, it was undergoing renovations, and bamboo scaffolding covered parts of the buildings. This reportedly helped the flames spread more quickly.
Video footage from the scene shows thick smoke rising into the sky.  Firefighters spray water from ladders to try to contain the fire. Sadly, at least one firefighter is among the reported fatalities.
In response to the disaster, Hong Kong authorities have opened temporary shelters for displaced residents, including the Kwong Fuk Community Hall and the Tung Cheong Street Leisure Building. A help desk has been set up at Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital to assist those affected and answer public inquiries. There is also a hotline available at 2658 4040. The Tai Po District Office has promised to keep a close watch on the situation and increase shelter support if necessary.
Residents and neighbors have described scenes of chaos as the fire spread quickly through the high-rise towers. They highlighted the risks associated with scaffolding during large renovations. Officials have not yet confirmed the cause of the fire, but investigations are ongoing.
