Day 31: Together in God’s Wisdom

Bible reading for 40.Day 2026 | James 3:13-17

Today’s devotion is about wisdom. 

Naturally, this is something that’s relevant to all Christians.

But I want to specifically direct today’s message to all the young adults among us. 

Now, who is a young adult?

A young adult is one who is new to the world of “adulting” and has begun to take on the responsibilities of an adult. 

So, those of you who are in a tertiary institution preparing yourself for the next 30 or 40 years in a chosen career path, I would say you are already a young adult.  

Those of you who are just about to enter the workforce or you have just entered the workforce, you’re a young adult. 

You could even be in your late teens, but perhaps had to start working to help support your family. You’re a young adult as well. 

See, once you start taking on adult responsibilities in life, things start to get really complex really fast. And that’s why I want to talk about wisdom today. 

As life becomes more complex, what we really need is wisdom. But not just any wisdom. We need God’s wisdom. 

The Bible teaches us that not all wisdom is the same. 

James 3:13-17 says:

“Who is wise and understanding among you? Let them show it by their good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom. But if you harbour bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. Such ‘wisdom’ does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice.

“But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere.”

Essentially, there are two types of wisdom – Heavenly and earthly wisdom, Godly and demonic wisdom. Not all wisdom is the same. 

As young adults, your lives are becoming more complex. 

What you need is to be plugged in to the right kind of wisdom to navigate these complexities. 

Thankfully, the Bible tells us that we can ask God for wisdom. 

In James 1:5 it says, “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.”

As we look through the Bible, I believe there are at least two ways God gives us wisdom. 

Firstly, God imparts His wisdom directly to us. 

Secondly, God imparts His wisdom through the counsel of godly people around us. 

So, what that means is that we truly become wiser when we walk together with God and together with His people. 

How can we stay plugged in to God’s wisdom and not the world’s wisdom?

1. Don’t distance yourself from God

If God Himself is the source of pure or true wisdom, then we must stay close with Him and walk together with Him through life. 

As you try to figure out this thing called “adulting”, learn to involve God in everything you do and every decision you make, whether big or small. 

Proverbs 2:6 tells us: “For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.”

So, don’t distance yourself from God and learn to rely on His wisdom.

2. Don’t isolate yourself from godly people

Since God gives us wisdom through godly people around us, then we must ensure that we don’t become isolated from God’s community. 

As we become adults, one of the struggles we will have is that we end up relying more on the world’s wisdom. 

We follow worldly trends on how to handle our finances, rely on earthly principles to guide us, or we turn to those who follow such trends or rely on such principles. 

There may be wisdom in all these. Some of these may even give us short-term gains. 

But don’t confuse these for heavenly wisdom. 

Proverbs 13:20 says: “Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm.”

When we surround ourselves with godly people, then it is natural that we become wise in a godly manner. 

But when we isolate ourselves from God’s people and mainly rely on earthly wisdom, then, ultimately, we suffer harm. 

As young adults, my prayer is that you will start your “adulting” life on the right foot. 

And it begins with this question: Are you depending on God’s wisdom or the world’s wisdom?

It could be in the area of deciding what course to study, what job to take, or how to handle a particular situation.  

Remember, God will provide true wisdom for us. So, don’t distance yourself from God, and don’t isolate yourself from godly people. 

For the rest of us who aren’t young adults, will you join me in praying for the young adults among us?

Let’s pray.

Lord, we thank You so much for this wonderful day, for this time that we have looking to Your Word. We thank You that You hear our prayers and You are a God who gives generously to us, particularly in the area of wisdom. 

We pray for the young adults, that You will grant them Your heavenly, divine wisdom in every single thing they do. As life becomes more complex, very fast for them, may they always turn to You and rely on You for that wisdom. 

Lord, I pray for the rest of us, that we too would learn walk in Your wisdom. May You use us to bring Your godly counsel to the young adults among us. 

We thank You for this time, we bless Your holy name, in Your mighty name we pray, Amen.

Reflect:

1. Have we been listening and relying on the world’s wisdom instead of God’s wisdom?

2. How can we, as adults, support the young people in our lives with godly wisdom?

3. Will we open our eyes and hearts to notice and help the young people who have been distancing themselves from God and isolating themselves from godly people?

Pray:

1. That the young people in our churches will learn the fear of the Lord, for that is the beginning of wisdom.

2. That our young people will learn to seek wisdom from God and godly people.

3. That the Lord will grant His divine wisdom to all in the church, from the young to the old.
