Daddy Showkey announces week-long celebration for 56th birthday, 50-year music milestone

Veteran Nigerian singer John Odafe Asiemo, better known as Daddy Showkey, will celebrate 50 years on stage during a week-long programme to mark his 56th birthday in August.

Daddy Showkey shared the plans on the ‘Tochi Talks Diaspora’ podcast. He said the events will begin during the week of his birthday on August 4.

The singer said fans will enjoy a concert in Ajegunle on August 8. The celebration will end with another show at Eko Hotel and Suites on August 9.

Celebrating 50 years on stage. I am looking at August. My birthday is August 4. That week of my birthday, a lot of things will happen. We will have a show in Ajegunle on August 8, and on the 9th, we will have one at Eko Hotels. That would be for everybody,” he said.

Born in August 1970, Daddy Showkey grew up in Ajegunle, Lagos. He rose to fame in the early 1990s and became one of Nigeria’s biggest music stars.

He gained wide popularity for his signature ‘Galala’ dance style. His music focused on love, religion and social issues.

Some of his best-known songs include Fire Fire (1991), Diana (1996), The Name (2000), Ghetto Soldier (2011) and Jehovah (2011).

The week-long celebration will honour his five decades in music. It will also give fans a chance to celebrate the veteran entertainer’s long career.
