Communication Ministry orders reversal of GDCL staff suspension

The Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations has instructed the management of Ghana Digital Centres Limited (GDCL) to promptly retract its decision to temporarily suspend the employment contracts of all employees due to flood damage at the company’s Accra facility.

In a statement released on Tuesday, July 1, the Ministry expressed a “very strong view” regarding the directive outlined in a circular from GDCL, which announced the suspension of all employment contracts effective July 1, pending a thorough evaluation of the situation.

“The Ministry takes a very strong view of the directive and immediately instructs Management to reverse that decision. All GDCL staff are to disregard the directive,” the statement indicated.

This directive follows GDCL’s announcement of a temporary suspension of staff contracts, citing significant damage from the floods on June 29, which disrupted operations at the technology hub and impacted businesses within the facility.

The Ministry affirmed its support for the staff affected by the floods.

“At a time when staff have been personally impacted by the June 29 floods, the Ministry stands with its staff and the staff of all our agencies,” the statement further noted.

Additionally, the Ministry revealed that the management of Ghana Digital Centres Limited has been invited to a meeting on Wednesday, July 2, to address the issue.

This meeting comes after a visit by the Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, to the centre on June 30 to evaluate the extent of the damage caused by the floods to the facility and the businesses operating within the complex.

Previously, the Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Ghana Digital Centres Limited, Christine Adwoa Agyapomaa Ansong, defended the temporary suspension of employment contracts, asserting that it did not equate to dismissals.

She clarified that the decision was prompted by significant flood damage, which made certain areas of the facility unsafe and interrupted the centre’s ability to generate revenue.

As she stated, management plans to bring back staff once the restoration efforts are finished and regular operations are reinstated.
