Thiago Silva made history in Chelsea’s Premier League trip to Newcastle but had an afternoon to forget.

Thiago Silva made history in Chelsea’s trip to Newcastle United on Saturday, becoming the oldest outfield player in the club’s history. But the 39-year-old endured a nightmare afternoon at St James’ Park, topped off by a horror blunder to help Newcastle on their way to an emphatic victory.

Mauricio Pochettino named Silva at the heart of a back four alongside Benoit Badiashile, marking a landmark appearance.

By featuring, he surpassed Dick Spence (39y 57d) – who held the record since 1947 – as Chelsea’s oldest-ever outfield player at 39y 64d.

However, Silva couldn’t inspire Chelsea to a huge three points in the Premier League as Newcastle ran riot on Tyneside.

Alexander Isak opened the scoring on 13 minutes before Raheem Sterling drew the visitors level with a stunning free-kick later in the first half.

But Jamaal Lascelles restored Newcastle’s lead on the hour mark, and just one minute later, Joelinton profited from a disastrous Silva howler to make it three.

Shortly after Chelsea’s kick-off, the experienced Brazilian seemingly lost concentration on the ball at the back, directing an aimless pass into the path of his compatriot, leaving Robert Sanchez’s goal at his mercy.

The Blues’ afternoon went from bad to worse in the 73rd minute when referee Simon Hooper sent captain Reece James off for a second yellow card.

And Anthony Gordon piled onto Pochettino’s misery by adding a fourth before full-time, sending Newcastle within three points of the top four.

Meanwhile, Chelsea are slumped in 10th after a fifth defeat in 13 Premier League games, having won just one of their last five.

Chelsea face a daunting trifecta of upcoming fixtures, hosting Brighton and Hove Albion at Stamford Bridge before back-to-back trips to Manchester United and Everton.

Supporters fumed over Silva’s performance, with many on social media wanting this season to be his last in west London as he reaches the dying embers of his twilight years.

The Brazil international was due to depart Chelsea in the summer before extending his contract by a further year in February, ensuring he started the Pochettino era as an important figure in his dressing room.

But he will likely depart at the end of a current campaign, by which point he will have represented the club for four years since joining from Paris Saint-Germain in 2020.

Pochettino’s other centre-backs, Levi Colwill and Axel Disasi, started on the bench at St James’ Park, while Trevoh Chalobah and Wesley Fofana remain sidelined.
