ChatGPT adds parental controls for teens

OpenAI launches ChatGPT with parental controls to keep teens safe. New tools let parents monitor, guide, and protect their kids online.

OpenAI just announced a major update that directly affects younger users. Starting this month, teens under 18 will see a new ChatGPT experience built with safety in mind. This comes as regulators and parents demand stronger protections for kids using AI chatbots.

Why OpenAI made this move

The Federal Trade Commission has been looking into how AI companies handle children’s safety. Concerns grew after a lawsuit blamed ChatGPT for a teen’s tragic suicide. In response, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman explained that the company is prioritizing safety ahead of privacy and freedom for minors.

“We prioritize safety ahead of privacy and freedom for teens; this is a new and powerful technology, and we believe minors need significant protection,” Altman wrote in a recent blog post.

That principle is shaping how the new system works. Teens will now get an age-appropriate version of ChatGPT that blocks explicit and harmful content. If a user under 18 shows signs of being in acute distress, OpenAI may even alert parents or, in rare cases, law enforcement.

How age detection works

OpenAI is building new technology to better estimate a user’s age. If there’s any doubt, ChatGPT will default to the under-18 version. In some regions, OpenAI may even ask for ID verification. This is a tradeoff, but one the company believes is necessary to protect teens.

What parental controls include

OpenAI’s upcoming parental controls give families more oversight. Parents will be able to:

  • Link their account to their teen’s ChatGPT profile
  • Set blackout hours when the chatbot can’t be used
  • Turn off certain features they don’t want available
  • Get notifications if their child shows signs of crisis
  • Shape how ChatGPT responds to their teen’s questions

These tools aim to balance guidance with giving teens safe access to technology.

What parents can do to keep their kids safe

Technology can help, but parents play the most important role. Here are steps families can take:

1) Stay involved: Talk openly with your teen about how they use ChatGPT. Ask what they search for and why.

2) Set boundaries: Use the blackout feature to encourage healthy tech breaks. After linking your account with your teen’s, go into parental controls, pick the days and hours when ChatGPT should be off-limits, and save your settings. You can adjust the schedule anytime.

3) Guide conversations: Show your teen how to ask questions responsibly and spot when AI may not be giving complete answers.

4) Check in often: Look for changes in behavior or mood that may point to stress, anxiety, or misuse of the tool.

Parental controls work best when combined with trust and regular conversations.

Kurt’s key takeaways

AI tools like ChatGPT are changing how teens learn, talk, and explore the world. OpenAI’s new safeguards mark an important step toward making this technology safer for families. While no system is perfect, parents now have more tools to guide their kids online. The balance between safety, freedom, and privacy is tricky. But this update shows that tech companies are starting to listen.
