Change these 2 iPhone settings now

Hackers target 2 default iPhone settings to steal your data. Change them now to boost your security and protect your personal info.

Ever think your iPhone is safe right out of the box? The truth is, some default settings can actually open the door for hackers. Security experts warn that two features, both enabled by default, make it easier for attackers to infiltrate your device when you connect to public Wi-Fi or use AirPlay. The good news is that fixing this takes less than two minutes. Here’s how to do it.

Why you need to change these settings

Hackers look for easy ways in, and unfortunately, Apple’s default setup can help them. When “Ask to Join Networks” and certain AirPlay settings are enabled, attackers can trick your iPhone into connecting to a network where it shouldn’t. From there, they may be able to peek into your activity on public networks.

Step 1: Turn off “Ask to Join Networks”

This first setting makes your iPhone more vulnerable in places like airports, hotels, or coffee shops.

  • Open Settings.
  • Tap Wi-Fi.
  • Scroll down to Ask to Join Networks.
  • Switch it off.

By disabling this, you stop your iPhone from automatically searching for and connecting to nearby networks that hackers may set up.

Step 2: Adjust your AirPlay settings

Next, you’ll need to limit how AirPlay interacts with public networks.

  • Open Settings.
  • Tap General.
  • Select AirPlay & Continuity.
  • Change AirPlay to Ask or Never.

If you use AirPlay often, “Ask” makes sense. But for maximum security, “Never” is the safest choice. This prevents strangers from attempting to establish unwanted connections to your phone over shared Wi-Fi.

Kurt’s key takeaways

Your iPhone may be powerful, but its default settings are not always designed with security as the top priority. By changing just two toggles-Wi-Fi “Ask to Join Networks” and AirPlay preferences you shut down two of the most common ways hackers try to sneak in. It’s quick, simple, and can give you peace of mind when you’re on public Wi-Fi.
