CELEBRITY IN FOCUS: MR FUNNY (SABINUS)

Nigeria comedian and Skit Maker, Chukwuemeka Emmanuel Ejekwu popularly known as Mr Funny or Oga Sabinus is one of the most popular comedian in Nigeria.

He is from Rivers State and was born in Port Harcourt. He schooled at the University of Port Harcourt where he studied Linguistic and Communication studies.

According to Mr Funny, the first time tried comedy was when he was in secondary school

"Pupils would gather to watch me perform mimicry of teachers after class. They laughed and encouraged me to study the teachers well so they could watch me mimic them."

He also said the first time he tried stand-comedy was at University of Port Harcourt where he schooled 

"I and another guy formed a crew called "Bottle and Strong". We went to a competition but we didn’t win. The crowd chased us from the stage. I would say the first time was hectic but I kept pushing."

Mr Funny's career started in 2015 but he began to see mainstream success in 2019

"In 2015 during a particular School Student Union week, i decided to pursue his career further by uploading various comedy skits on my social media handles, especially Instagram.

"I started getting noticed by top Instagram influencers who started sharing his skits and thats how my platform grew."

In 2022, Mr Funny won the best Content creator at the Africa Magic Viewers Choice Award (AMVCA)
