Briton Chantelle Cameron has been elevated to full WBC light-welterweight world champion after Katie Taylor was named “champion in recess”.

The 34-year-old Northampton fighter steps up from ‘interim’ status after Taylor informed the sanctioning body she plans to take time away from boxing.

Cameron, who has won 21 of her 22 professional fights since turning pro in 2017, handed Taylor her first career defeat in May 2023 to become undisputed champion, before losing the rematch six months later.

A trilogy bout had been mandated, but Taylor chose not to pursue it as she focuses on a break from boxing.

The WBC confirmed to BBC Sport the decision to upgrade Cameron this week and ordered her to face fellow Briton Sandy Ryan as a ‘mandatory defence’ of her title.

Cameron paid tribute to promoters Jake Paul and Nakisa Bidarian after signing with Most Valuable Promotions in May.

“Looking forward to making more moves in my career with a great team and the future is looking bright,” she posted on Instagram.

Irish superstar Taylor has been recognised as WBC emeritus champion, meaning she would be first in line for a title shot should she return.
