California Dog Registered as Voter Sparks Fresh Scrutiny Over U.S Elections

A voter‑fraud case involving a dog in Southern California has exposed fresh weaknesses inside California’s election records, after investigators confirmed that a woman successfully registered her pet and used the animal’s identity to cast ballots in two elections.

The woman behind the act faces five felony charges after officials confirmed she registered her dog and used the animal’s identity to cast ballots in two elections, with one of those ballots counted.

The discovery is one of several incidents that have renewed scrutiny of California’s voter records, which show thousands of inactive, outdated, or questionable entries.

California Voter Registration Irregularities

The incident adds to a list of irregularities found in state voter rolls in the U.S after records in California were revealed showing hundreds of people marked as active voters despite having died years earlier.

One woman who died in 1988 is listed as having voted in 2014, 26 years prior.

Another case involves Julita Aboutin, who died in 2006 but is recorded as having voted in 2014, 2012, 2010 and 2008.

In an interview seen by The Kenya Times, her daughter says her mother never voted after her death.

However, the county registrar confirms that she has signed vote‑by‑mail envelopes in Aboutin’s name for elections held years after she was buried.

According to county officials responsible for voter rolls, the problem is widespread and linked to outdated registration systems.

California allows voter registration without a driver’s licence number or Social Security number.

Election offices must then match millions of entries against federal databases.

State data show that nearly three‑quarters of those records return no confirmed match, leaving counties with large numbers of unverified entries.

California in a Predicament

Among the major issues affecting California’s ability to deal with voter registration is the rapid population growth that continues to stretch the state’s administrative systems.

With more than 22 million registered voters, election staff must process huge monthly changes, including new registrations, address updates, and verification requests.

Counties report that a single month can produce up to 70,000 updates, making it difficult to follow up on every flagged entry, especially those involving incomplete or unmatched information.

The size of the population also increases the number of ballots mailed each election cycle, creating more chances for errors when names remain on the rolls long after residents move or die.

Large cities experience constant movement, with people shifting between counties for work, school, or housing.

These patterns leave voter records outdated unless counties conduct continuous checks, something officials say they lack the time and workforce to do.

When millions of records return with no match, county offices must decide which entries require manual review, which slows verification and allows questionable records to remain active for years.

The state’s open registration rules, designed to encourage participation, have instead increased administrative pressure, making oversight uneven.

U.S’ 2020 Election

The dispute over Donald Trump’s 2020 election loss became one of the most contested episodes in modern U.S politics, driven by allegations that courts later found unsupported.

Trump and his allies filed 62 lawsuits challenging the results in key states, but judges, including several appointed by Trump, dismissed almost all the cases for lack of evidence.

A review of 194 court decisions linked to election‑fraud challenges showed only 14 percent ruled in Trump’s favor, with federal and state judges repeatedly stating that the claims failed to meet legal standards of proof.

In Arizona, a recount confirmed 99.45 percent tabulation accuracy, attributing discrepancies to human error rather than manipulation.
