Breaking: UI Students Protest 82-Day Power Outage at UCH, Demand Immediate Action

Hundreds of students from the University of Ibadan (UI), Oyo State, have staged a peaceful demonstration in protest against the 82-day power outage at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan.

PulseNets learned that UCH, which serves as the teaching hospital for UI’s medical students, has been without power for over a year due to outstanding debts owed to the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC).

The power supply to UCH was reportedly cut off by IBEDC in March 2024 following unpaid electricity bills. PulseNets also learned that a similar disconnection occurred in November 2023 for the same reason, and as of now, power has yet to be restored.

PulseNets reported that the protest, held early Wednesday morning, was organized by students from the University of Ibadan to express their frustration over the prolonged blackout.

The President of the Students’ Union (SU), Bolaji Aweda, who led the procession, spoke to PulseNets during the protest. He emphasized the adverse effects of the situation on students, stating:

“We are protesting against what is happening. And, of course, our students are affected.

“For 82 days, there has been no light at UCH, and this is due to the inability of UCH to pay its electricity bill to IBEDC.

“IBEDC has demanded that UCH settle its debt before they will restore power,” he said.

PulseNets continues to monitor the situation as students demand immediate action to resolve the power crisis.
