BREAKING: President Tinubu Removes IGP Egbetokun, Appoints AIG Tunji as New Inspector-General of Police

By Emmanuel Kwada

President Bola Tinubu has removed Kayode Egbetokun as Inspector-General of Police (IGP) and appointed Assistant Inspector-General (AIG) Olatunji (Tunji) Disu as his successor.

The development was confirmed by a reliable presidency source to ARISE News on Tuesday afternoon. “AIG Tunji Disu is the new IGP. Confirmed,” the source stated, adding that the appointment has received double confirmation and that an official announcement from the Presidency is expected shortly.

Egbetokun, who was appointed as the 22nd IGP by President Tinubu in June 2023 and later confirmed in October of that year, has been asked to step down, with reports from multiple sources indicating the move came at the President’s request following a meeting at the Presidential Villa.

Some outlets described the removal as forced resignation amid ongoing controversies surrounding his tenure, including allegations of corruption and abuse of office, though no official reason has been provided yet.

Efforts to reach the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Benjamin Hundeyin, for a reaction were unsuccessful at the time of this report. The Nigeria Police Force headquarters has remained silent on the matter, with no formal statement issued as of press time.

AIG Olatunji Rilwan Disu, born April 13, 1966, in Lagos Island, joined the Nigeria Police Force on May 18, 1992, as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police after training at the Nigeria Police Academy.

He holds a Bachelor of Arts in English Education from Lagos State University and has undergone specialized training in forensic investigations, criminal intelligence, and leadership.

Disu’s career highlights include serving as head of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT), succeeding Abba Kyari in 2021. He has held key positions such as Commissioner of Police in Rivers State and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, where he was commended for enhancing security and investigative capabilities.

Most recently, he was redeployed in early February 2026 as AIG in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex in Alagbon, Lagos—a strategic unit handling high-profile cases.
